Fiorentina, known by their fans as Viola (Violet) and Gigliati (Lilies) were founded in 1926. Fiorentina was formed by local noble Luigi Ridolfi who initiated a merger of the two clubs CS Firenze and PG Libertas. The aim of this merger was to give Florence a stronger team that could compete better.
Fiorentina originally played in a half red half white style shirt much like the Feyenoord shirt. They then changed to their famous violet in 1928 and have stuck with it ever since.
Fiorentina currently play their home matches at the Stadio Artemio Franchi which holds a capacity of 47,282. This has been Fiorentina’s stadium since 1931.
Fiorentina have had many major honours over the years including two Serie A titles in 1956 and 1969. They have also won the Copa Italia six times last lifting the trophy in 2001 and the Supercoppa Italia in 1996. The trophies have not just been won domestically in Italy, Fiorentina have also won the Uefa Cup Winners Cup in 1961.
