Hamburg, known by their fans as Rothosen (“Red Shorts”) or The Bundesliga-Dinosaur were founded in 1887. The club can trace its roots back to merger of Der Hohenfelder Sportclub and Wandsbek-Marienthaler Sportclub in 1887. The current club though was formed out of a merger between 3 Hamburg clubs Sportclub Germania zu Hamburg, Hamburger FC (1888) and FC Falke Eppendorf (1906).
The Hamburg home shirt is red and white in honour of the city of Hamburg’s colours and the black and blue which is more often that not the colours of the Hamburg away shirt come from the oldest of the founding clubs, Germania, this is also used on the club badge.
Hamburger SV currently play their home games at the Imtech Arena which holds a capacity of 57,000. The club previously played at the original Volksparkstadion from 1953 until 2000 when the new stadium sometimes referred to as the Volksparkstadion was built.
Hamburg regularly achieve European qualification although last season was fairly poor by their standards. This club has won virtually every major honour going in German football as well as in European competition. Hamburg have won the German championship 6 times, although they’ve not won it since 1983. They also won the European Cup in 1983.
